How To Size Men’s Necklaces and Chains
The men’s jewelry industry has grown leaps and bounds in the last ten years. With more and more men looking towards jewelry as their go-to accessory to top off their fit - we have seen a huge increase in first time buyers. With all these first time buyers, we have noticed at Stephen & Jung that many of the first time buyers are looking towards necklaces and chains to be their first buys.
For the uninitiated, jewelry buying can be an extremely confusing experience. What material should my jewelry be made of? Is gold plated jewelry crap? (yes) How do I tell what size I am? These are just a few of questions you might just be asking yourself right now. In our last blog we addressed why we think 14k Gold Filled is the best material for men’s gold jewelry, but today let’s address how to choose the right necklace and chain size.
Measuring Your Neck
For this we recommend pulling out the ol’ soft tape measure and wrapping it around your neck - making sure to keep the tape measure parallel to the floor as you measure. To calculate your minimum recommended chain length, take your neck measurement and add 2 inches or (5cm). For example, let's say you measured 17in, then 19in would be the smallest size expected to fit comfortably.
Generic Men’s Necklace/Chain Sizing Guide
18 Inch
This length would be considered a choker on most men. Depending on the circumference of your neck, this length necklace may fall an inch below a man's Adam's apple. For an adult man, this length may be too tight and uncomfortable.
20 Inch
The 20 inch chain will likely fall between the first and second button on a man's shirt or at the collarbone. This length necklace can be worn inside or outside a shirt.
22 Inch
A very common length for a man's necklace, it can work nicely as a cross, dog tag, or other pendant is added to the chain. Usually falling a few inches below the collarbone, this necklace is usually worn outside a shirt.
24 Inch
Usually falling in the middle of the sternum and worn outside a shirt, this length necklace also is fitting when a cross, dog tag, or other pendant is added to the chain.
30 Inch
The longest of any standard length men's necklace, this length is designed to be worn outside the shirt.
Stephen & Jung’s Recommendation for Necklace/Chain Sizes
In our experience, most first time buyers regret going too short. This was such a common theme for our first time buyers that we decided to only offer a single size for all of our necklaces with a pendant - to ensure our customers didn’t make this sizing mistake.
For men looking to wear a single chain or necklace with a pendant, we highly recommend going for 24 inches. For men looking to stack their chains/necklaces we highly recommend you buy 22 inches and up.
